This is Wellington’s best and closest day trip! Just a quick ferry ride from Days Bay or the city and you can be on Matiu/ Somes Island. Plenty to explore including bush tracks and native wildlife. It also has a fascinating history with evidence of pre-colonial Māori havitation, remnants of world war internment canps and anti-aircraft gun emplacements.
