On December 31, 1973 the 40th Sugar Bowl was held at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana in front of 85,161 fans and pitted the top ranked Alabama Crimson Tide against the 3rd ranked Notre Dame Fighting. Both teams were undefeated. Underdog Notre Dame won 24–23; the game received a 25.3 Nielsen rating, making it one of the highest-rated college football games in history.
