May 1942 — The Battle of Coral Sea ends in a strategic victory for the Allies. Though both sides suffer heavy losses, the Japanese advance toward Port Moresby is halted. It’s the first naval battle fought entirely by aircraft from carriers—ships never see each other. The U.S. loses the USS Lexington, but Japan loses planes and veteran pilots.
