Oct 22, 2017 · I think it depends entirely on the larger context. If you're sitting behind the wheel of a car, it would be very natural to say "This is the first time", but saying "It is the first time" sounds weird. "It" is more general and doesn't necessarily refer to anything present. –

I realise at least some of the claimed 115,000 instances of as it was the first time will be for the sense as = since, but a good proportion will match the current context. And there are only 5 instances of as it was at the first time. –
