The state of Washington was able to provide unemployment benefits to federal workers during the last partial government shutdown from December 2018 to January 2019, but federal guidance has changed, according to the state.

Senate Republicans cited a call by the American Federation of Government Employees to pass a funding extension in an attempt to pressure Democrats to relent. The effort fell flat.

The administration is trying to get rid of 4,000 federal employees as a way to squeeze Democrats who are standing their ground.

The ruling came the same day as Democrat-led states sued the federal government for pausing SNAP benefits for November.

Some workers are taking gig jobs and others are substitute teaching, while others cancel vacations, defer bills and spend savings.
