KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Monday urged Asia-Pacific leaders to choose dialogue over coercion and cooperation over confrontation, as he opened the East Asia summit at a time of sharpening rivalry between the United States and China.

When President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping meet in South Korea this week, one topic of discussion will be rare earths, which play an important role in the U.S. and in Asia, where there are many interconnections.

U.S. President Donald Trump is in Japan as part of his trip to Asia, which is focused on trade. He arrived from Malaysia, where he participated in a regional summit. He's set to visit South Korea next.
