Hurricane Melissa Forecast To Rapidly Intensify To Category 5; Catastrophic Threat To Jamaica, Haiti
Melissa could be one of the most intense, devastating hurricanes on record in Jamaica, with widespread flooding, landslides and destructive winds. Flooding rain is also a grave concern in Hispaniola.
KINGSTON, Jamaica - Tropical Storm Melissa has become a hurricane and is expected to strengthen into at least a Category 4 intensity, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said Saturday.
At 11 p.m. Saturday, the National Hurricane Center issued an advisory stating that Category 3 Hurricane Melissa is in the Caribbean Sea, 125 miles south-southeast of Kingston Jamaica and 280 miles west-southwest of Port Au Prince Haiti. The hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph, is moving west at 3 mph.
