Millions of Americans needing to renew their passports can now do so online instead of mailing the State Department paper documents with a check. The department announced Wednesday that its online system is now open after months of limited testing and years of pilots.

The new program will be available 24/7 for adult applicants with a United States address, who are renewing a 10-year passport that has expired within the past five years, or renewing passports that will expire in the coming year.
