A volcanic fissure has opened up near the town of Grindavík on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula following a significant uptick in earthquake activity. Images show lava breaching the town's defensive barrier, as Icelandic Met Office (IMO) representatives warn the fissure could continue to grow.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported today that the “high fountain phase” of episode 16 of the ongoing Kilauea eruption begun at 10:24 a.m.

Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said that the high fountain phase of “episode 16” had begun as of 10:24 a.m., about 12 hours after the start of the eruption.

Geologists say Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano shot lava as high as 1,000 feet into the air during its most recent eruptive episode.
