A former Seattle-area cop found guilty of murder was sentenced to more than 16 years in prison on Thursday. Jeffrey Nelson, 46, was convicted in June of second-degree murder and first-degree assault in the 2019 killing of 26-year-old Jesse Sarey.
Thursday’s ruling is the first conviction under a Washington state law that made it easier to prosecute officers for on-duty killings.
The police officer, Jeffrey Nelson, shot and killed Jesse Sarey, 26, while attempting to arrest him in May 2019. Mr. Nelson was found guilty of murder and assault last June.
