An executive order by Donald Trump prohibits all DEI programs at federal institutions. Some have already dismantled them.

The museum’s move followed a similar one last week by the National Gallery, as museums try to comply with an executive order that called diversity programs “illegal and immoral.”

The Smithsonian Institution is closing its Office of Diversity, freezing federal hiring and ordering employees back to in-office work, according to an email sent by Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III.

Just days after the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. said it would cancel its diversity, equity and inclusion programs, the Smithsonian Institution, a consortium that includes 21 national museums,

"Our Institution is fully committed to excellence in our workforce, free from discrimination and harassment," wrote a Smithsonian Institution spokesperson in an email to NPR. "We are closing our Office of Diversity but retaining our efforts at visitor accessibility as it serves a critical function.
