MLB insider presents alternative option for Red Sox after losing Alex Bregman
The Boston Red Sox are scrambling to get their offseason back on track after they lost All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs in free agency. And while it appears the team may be running out of options,
Bregman, of course, is the big winner, patiently working the system as a free agent represented by Scott Boras. By taking a short-term offer from the Boston Red Sox last year and using the opt-out clause in that contract, Bregman can keep score by earning $215 million over six seasons, though some of that money will be deferred.
If you're a team looking for a long-term star hitter in free agency, you're probably looking at Kyle Tucker, who's been the unquestioned No. 1 free agent on the market all winter as an elite bat who's just entering his age-29 season.
Bichette, four years younger than Bregman, hit .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs in 139 games in what was a bounce-back season. Bregman hit at .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 games played in 2025. On Saturday, MLB insider Jon Heyman linked the Philadelphia Phillies to Bo Bichete. Cole Tucker made his feelings known about that match.
The Chicago Cubs introduced third baseman Alex Bregman at Wrigley Field on Thursday, after signing him to a $175 million, five-year contract.
