The Chicago Cubs made arguably the biggest splash of the offseason so far when they signed Alex Bregman to a five-year, $175 million contract on Saturday night.

After signing the third-richest contract in Chicago Cubs history and changing his jersey number to No. 3, third baseman Alex Bregman said his biggest priorities are his family and winning a third World Series championship.

It’s not all offense, though. Bregman is an excellent defender at third base. By Statcast’s fielding run value Bregman was a positive contributor notching three FRV last season in 972 innings. By comparison, Matt Shaw had -1 FRV in 1010 innings for the Cubs last season.

Throughout his 10 years in the league, Bregman’s notably worn the No. 2, which is sported by Nico Hoerner on the Cubs. When asked during his introductory press conference on Thursday whether he asked Hoerner about changing numbers, Bregman gave a smart response as to why he elected to instead wear No. 3 in Chicago.
