The National Hurricane Center warned that heavy rainfall would cause “catastrophic flash flooding and landslides across southwestern Haiti by this weekend into early next week.”

Hurricane Melissa is expected to make landfall in Jamaica as a major hurricane on Tuesday, bringing torrential rainfall, storm surges, and winds up to 135mph.

Experts warn the storm is a worst-case scenario as Melissa’s slow crawl through the region will subject places in its path to longer stretches of rain, winds and heightened storm surge.
