Hurricane Erin is set to sweep by Puerto Rico this weekend, bringing with it high winds and heavy rains. Luckily, it’s not set to make landfall, but the close call could still pose problems for the island’s increasingly fragile power grid.

Puerto Rico (San Juan): Variably cloudy skies with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms Friday. Highs near 91°F with east winds at 10–15 mph. Conditions will worsen over the weekend, with 90% rain chances on Sunday and breezy south-southwest winds up to 20 mph as Erin passes north.

However, the severity of those impacts is unknown at this time. Swells generated by Erin will begin affecting portions of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by this weekend. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions, the NHC said.

Tropical Storm Erin on Tuesday continued to push west through the Atlantic with the National Hurricane Center still forecasting it to become a major hurricane, and Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands now within the projected path.

The shooting happened in the predawn hours at a nightspot called “Shelter for Mistreated Men” in La Perla, a coastal community that has struggled to shed its dark reputation.
