The statewide Sierra Nevada snowpack, which provides nearly one-third of California’s water supply, began the year in good shape, at 108% of normal.

Snow storms caused drivers to be extra cautious traveling I-80 on Tuesday with the higher elevations in the Sierra getting a fresh dumping of snow.

The Sierra snowpack is lagging far behind historical averages, but this week's storms should help matters. Rain is possible throughout the week in the valleys, but the Lake Tahoe area and the northern Sierra could see snow through at least the middle of the month.
