Hurricane Melissa Forecast To Rapidly Intensify To Category 5; Catastrophic Threat To Jamaica, Haiti
Melissa could be one of the most intense, devastating hurricanes on record in Jamaica, with widespread flooding, landslides and destructive winds. Flooding rain is also a grave concern in Hispaniola.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned that “life-threatening and catastrophic flash flooding and landslides [are] expected in portions of Jamaica and southern Hispaniola through midweek....”
The National Hurricane Center's 2 p.m. Friday update reported that Tropical Storm Melissa is in the Caribbean Sea, 230 miles southeast of Kingston Jamaica and 250 miles southwest of Port Au Prince Haiti. Packing maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, it is tracking east-southeast at 2 mph.
