The animal kingdom rules supreme for the first box office weekend of 2025. For the third week in a row, Mufasa: The Lion King faced off against Sonic the Hedgehog 3 — and this time, the apex predator came out on top.

Having staged something of a comeback during the Christmas week — a historically lucrative period at the box office — Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King passed a couple of important milestones both domestically and worldwide this weekend.

Mufasa: The Lion King” is an odd movie. Realistic-looking lions, warthogs, meerkats and whatever break into song repeatedly. It’s like a curious fever dream that doesn’t want to go away.

Mufasa: The Lion King features Aaron Pierre as the titular character. Now, the prequel movie has topped Nosferatu at the Christmas day box office.

With 'Mufasa' in theaters, here's our best guess as to when fans can expect the film to be released on VOD and Disney+.

Globally, the movie includes the voices of leads Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, the lion who grows up to be the king and father to Simba along with Kelvin Harrison Jr as Taka, who's eventually known as the antagonist named Scar, a prince and Mufasa's adoptive brother. The movie is available to watch in theatres across the world.
