Hawaii is being warned that "urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property." Watches have been ordered for California, Oregon, Washington and a vast swath of Alaska’s coastline.

A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula has triggered tsunami warnings in Japan and several states in the western United States, including Hawaii, Alaska and California.

The Fukushima Daiichi plant was the site of a major nuclear disaster following the devastating 9.0 magnitude Japan earthquake and tsunami in 2011. TEPCO added that there have been no injuries or abnormalities recorded at the plants, but that they will continue to monitor tsunami warnings.
