Hurricane Melissa formed Saturday in the Caribbean forecast to rapidly intensify close to a Category 5 storm, but moving slowly while dumping “catastrophic” amounts of rain on islands
The slow-moving storm was expected to drop torrential rain on Jamaica and the southern regions of Haiti and the Dominican Republic through Monday.
According to the hurricane center, Melissa has a significant possibility of making landfall on Jamaica as a major hurricane and could maintain major hurricane strength when it reaches eastern Cuba. Forecasters say Melissa poses little to no risk for Florida and the U.S. at this time.
